Cape Town

Grand Daddy Hotel

On Long Street, the hotel’s a local landmark which promotes local design. Heritage touches remain, not least in the vintage elevator. There’s a glimpse of Table Mountain from the rooftop bar during the day and by night the stars come out to sparkle by the truck load. It’s a buzzing place with the bar, restaurant and rooftop open to all, not just guests.

Sit down, this is quite the list. And not the norm.

7 Airstream trailers on the roof. All decorated  in different styles from the Karoo to the Gold Rush with animals and wine thrown in for good measure. Queen size bed, wet room with shower and WC. TV, aircon, bar, fridge. The trailers are right by the bar. Right. By. The. Bar. Expect a lively night and a great opportunity to nip out for a nightcap in your pjs.

The hotel has suites, luxury, superior and standard rooms.

2 suites - the Grand Daddy and the Sugar Daddy. Both have king size beds or twins. LCD TVs, lounge, marble bathroom, music system. Grand Daddy is 60sq metres, it can accommodate two children on a pull out sofa in the living room. It has a garden patio. Sugar Daddy is 45sq metres and has a private Juliet balcony overlooking life on Long Street.

Luxury rooms are 30sq metres and good for families.

Superior are 20sq metres as are standards - the latter has a window looking into the inner courtyard.

All rooms offer king size beds or twins except the single rooms which have a single bed and walk in shower.

Outdoor Pink Flamingo rooftop cinema - popcorn, bubbly and picnic baskets available; ‘Thirty Ate’ restaurant; Rooftop Sky bar; Air con; WiFi; Internet; Laundry service

Walk further up Long Street and straight into Cape Town’s nightlife.

Explore all the city has to offer. The V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, Table Mountain. Art galleries, museums, shopping.

Or hit the beaches.

Abbey Manor

It sounds like a British private school and looks like a Victorian town house. Built in 1905 when the world was a busy place. Las Vegas was founded, Einstein was busy publishing his brilliance, Cape Town’s City Hall was built and the biggest ever diamond was found in Pretoria. Called the Cullinan and over 3000 carats. Nice. Abbey Manor’s a bit of a gem too. Who wouldn’t want to rest on the slopes of Table Manor? But leave your tent in the car, it’s time for a bit of luxury.

Floreal House

A white house, alive with light at night. Floreal House with wooden framed windows overlooking the city, harbour and Table Bay. An half hour walk from the city centre in the quiet Oranjezicht area. If you can’t face that (and it is an uphill stroll), just jump in a taxi.

The Hyde Hotel

Current. Contemporary. Chic. Just a few words that spring to mind, but even the way the hotels’ name is written boasts its cosmopolitan and modern integrity. A style unto itself.
