Caprivi

Kazile Island Lodge

Kazile Island Lodge is a small, back-to-basics safari lodge on the Kwando River in the KAZA trans-frontier park of the Caprivi Region offering an excellent combination of land and water safaris.

Read through our staff profiles and it seems the Caprivi is our collective favourite destination - probably as an antidote to all the great big open spaces, blue skies and spectacular desert scenery of the rest of Namibia.

Featuring, nay forming, the very habitats that make Botswana’s Okavango Delta such a fantastic game viewing experience, but without the exclusive prices and costly access, the Caprivi remains a much underrated African safari destination.

And so we get very excited when news of a safari lodge spreads through the land and in Kazile Island Lodge recently opened (as of March 2017) there is a great deal to be excited about.

For a start this little safari lodge is actually on an island - accessible by safari boat - inside the Bwabwata National Park surrounded by as much pristine wilderness and prime game viewing glory you could ever hope for. And Kazile is brought to you by the same folk behind the very successful Nambwa Tented Camp in the same concession inside the KAZA - a trans-frontier wildlife sanctuary that, when all formalities are complete, will be the world’s largest nature reserve of any kind.

Accommodation is in Meru-style tents elevated on wooden decks and furnished to a high standard without compromising the bush experience: en suite bathrooms with hot running water, comfortable beds beneath elegant mosquito drapes, fans, power outlets and a private viewing deck.

The main lodge features a wonderful open-air lounge jutting into (and above, luckily) the Kwando River; a cool, spacious living area opens onto the never-ending floodplain invariably dotted with elephants, buffalos, hippos and the full offering of Africa’s amazing wildlife including lion, rare sightings of leopard, cheetah and hyena, giraffe, zebra, many antelope and hundreds of different bird species.

Facilities

Full board accommodation in 10 elevated Meru-style safari tents; en suite bathrooms with hot running water; private game viewing deck; hair dryer; cooling fan; 220v power outlet (generator-supplied, waking hours only); personal safe; complimentary mineral water; main living area with lounge, bar, dining area and a large game viewing deck; laundry service; airstrip and transfers

Activities

Guided river safaris in specially adapted game viewing boats are one of the best ways to get safely close to big game (they’re strangely not concerned with whatever’s on the water and so carry on their daily business as if you weren’t even there); guided game drives into Bwabwata National Park; guided bush walks with an experienced ranger; visits to the Mashi village and craft market

Shametu River Lodge

Picture yourself as The Mariner, Kevin Costner's anti hero, meandering through the water. Think mokoro rather than a trimaran, river rather than sea. This is for those of you that like the waterworld of Africa. But whereas the film's been described as a mess masquerading as a movie you'll exit this lodge feeling calm, chilled and chipper.

Camp Kwando

Camp Kwando is a rustic and relaxed riverside lodge with three types of accommodation: camping, island chalets and tree houses. The camp has a shaded swimming pool and a thatched lounge, restaurant and bar that open onto the river.

Nunda River Lodge

Situated in the verdant region of Caprivi, seven furnished Meru tents and three traditional thatched chalets sit along the river bank surrounded by shady trees and manicured gardens.
