Damaraland

Damaraland Camp

On the north bank of the Huab River Valley, Damaraland Camp looks south over bleached grass, clusters of wild mustard bush and acacia thickets towards the Burnt Mountain - a variable-coloured throwback from the days of volcanoes and dinosaurs.

Ten luxury tented rooms salute the setting sun and the Burnt Mountain's changing moods. The walk-in tents have en suite bathrooms with hot running water, twin or double beds, tea/coffee facilities and a private patio.

The main camp is tiled and thatched with reed sides and an air of cool contemplation. Next to the pool is a bar and on clear evenings the campfire and al fresco dinner are about as relaxing as you could ever want.

Activities

Guided walks, drives and cycling trails will lead you to age-old geological formations, ancient rock paintings, fascinating plants, birds and animals - and maybe an elephant or two.

Desert-adapted animals in the area include elephants, gemsbok, springbok, pure-bred ostriches, kudu, Hartman's mountain zebra and, if you're lucky, the world's last free-ranging black rhino. Common endemics are RĂ¼pell's korhaan, Monteiro's hornbill, white-tailed shrike, Herero chat and white-backed mousebird.
