Damaraland

Doro Nawas

Doro Nawas, in the Abu-Huab River valley, is a classic, tented safari camp with the benefit of modern architectural and design inspiration. Everything opens from floor to ceiling to include the spectacular views of the Etendeka Mountains and the red sandstone cliffs of Twyfelfontein - famous for its San rock engravings.

The 16 rooms are enormous stone, canvas, wood and thatch constructions with a private verandah and en suite bathrooms with and an additional outdoor shower.

The main living area sits on a small outcrop and has a wrap-around deck, more French doors than France and a stunning rooftop deck the looks out over the plains and up into the night sky. A pool deck, lounge, restaurant and bar make up the downstairs section and the view is almost as good.

Facilities

16 thatch, stone and canvas rooms, including a family room; private verandah; en suite bathroom with additional outdoor shower; fans; indoor and outdoor dining; swimming pool; bar; curio shop; gallery; laundry; airstrip

Activities

Nature drives to Twyfelfontein and tour of the ancient rock paintings and engravings; Burnt Mountain; Organ Pipes; desert-adapted elephants in the Aba-Huab Riverbed; stargazing; guided walks; cultural experiences.

Wildlife is not a feature but you may well see desert-adapted elephant and some of the Damaraland locals: gemsbok, springbok, ostrich, kudu, Hartman's mountain zebra and, if you're lucky, the world's last free-ranging black rhino. A highlight is the fascinating expedition to Twyfelfontein with its San art engravings, and the largest collection of prehistoric rock art in Africa.
