Hidden amongst the giant boulders of Damaraland, you’ll find the seven private campsites of Mowani. Away from the main lodge, as you'd want. Secluded, private and serene.
Immersed in nature and by the surrounds that make this area what it is (rugged, arid and bare) the campsites are what you’d expect in the middle of nowhere. A spot to park the car and pitch the tent, a basin and wash up area, a cooking area (over fire), a shaded seating area and an open-air bathroom.
Enjoy the ground beneath your feet, surrounded by nature. Add the endless view out over the Damaraland landscape and the quiet of being far from much else and you have found yourself a suitable place to call ‘home’ for a night or two.
Check in at Mowani Mountain Camp before making your way to the campsites, which are completely separate from the lodge, which is really just the reception on arrival and furthermore you’re on your own. The use of lodge facilities and activities is at lodge discretion and subject to availability, but since the lodge is almost always full, don’t bank on hanging around by the pool or heading off with a guide.
7 individual campsites that can accommodate groups of 5, 6 or 8 depending on site; private open-air bathroom with toilet and shower; hot water (by donkey); braai area for cooking; shaded seating area with table. No electricity. No WiFi. No pool. Wood available for purchase.
Self-guided nature walks and nature drives in the area. Search for the desert adapted elephants and other wildlife.
Visit the sights of Twyfelfontein: Burnt Mountain, Organ Pipes and rock engravings.
For a hint of culture, visit the Damara Living Museum just down the road. A cultural look into the lives of the local people of the area and how they lived in days gone by.
