Damaraland

Huab Lodge

Ask any Namibian tour guide where his favourite place is and the answer will be Damaraland. Something to do with the wide open spaces, the isolation, and the tenuous balance of nature in a rugged and dramatic landscape; or it could be the Huab Lodge.

Luxury and simplicity combine at this small owner-managed lodge in a way that typifies the essence of hospitality and good living.

Slightly off the beaten track - even by Damaraland standards - the Huab Lodge has eight stone and thatch bungalows with tiled floors, bright fabrics and a private verandah with a view over the Huab River valley. The main lodge is an enormous open-sided thatch gazebo crammed with comfy chairs, a family dinner table, reference books and a cosy bar.

Facilities

Eight stone and thatch bungalows; private patios; en suite bathrooms; hearty meals at the family table; swimming pool; thermal spring; wellness centre; reference library

Activities

Guided walks; game drives; self-guided hiking trails; bird watching; San rock art; community interaction; scenic tours; elephant tracking; stargazing

The lodge is in a private conservancy of 8,000 hectares and much of it has been restored to its former glory with the loving attention of Jan and Suzi van de Reep, who arrived in 1992 to a sorry state of degradation. Elephants now roam the Huab riverbed on ancient water routes and the area's native wild animals, plants and birds - over 200 species - have flourished.
