Damaraland

Palmwag Campsite

The campsite is part of Palmwag Lodge. Beside the Uniab River in North Western Namibia. A place of myth and legend. Animals who have changed themselves. To survive. These guys really, really want to live, wow, how they say no to extinction. They demand life. Oh the dramatic resilience of nature. A sweeter place to rock up and roll out the ground sheet would be harder to find.

Firstly, stop off at reception and check in.

Then make your way to your site. Good ablution blocks.

There are a few rules: no generators, quiet time is between 2200 and 0700, fires must be in the pits and flames no higher than 2ft.

You can bring your dog but it must be kept on a lead.

You can use all the facilities at the lodge. But all meals and activities must be booked before arriving.

Elephants are known to wander through camp so have your wits about you.

Facilities

Braai; power points; basic electricity; 2 swimming pools; poolside bar - light meals and drinks served from mid morning to 2200; no WiFi; nearby fuel station - cash only

Activities

This is the land famous for the desert elephant and black rhino; scenic drives; wildlife excursions; rhino tracking; guided walks (no children under 12)

Brandberg White Lady Lodge

At the end of a long, dusty, bumpy road is an oasis called the Brandberg White Lady Lodge: a pool, a cool drink and a secluded shady campsite with the Brandberg Mountain - Namibia's highest point - in full view.

Spitzkoppe Campsites

Climb, stop, stare. Emptiness everywhere. And picture this. When these rocks were formed, T Rex’s were prancing all over North America. Yup. The Tyrannosaurus Rex. The big guy. Living in America. Welcome to the Cretaceous Period. Jurassic World has ended and life, as it now exists, came together. Flowering plants made their international debut, Spitzkoppe creaked into form.

Camp Buruxa

No instagram, no uploading, no down loading. Just stop. Look. Listen. There’s nothing. Just an innate stillness. A liberating, dry emptiness. And there, in the hills near the Soris Soris turn off, deep in Damaraland is a potjie pot on a fire. An incongruous lamppost and a camp. Buruxa.
