La Rochelle Lodge

La Rochelle Lodge is 40km north of Tsumeb. And Tsumeb is the closest town to Etosha. The du Preez family developed it into a hunting and guest farm. Their ancestors were Hugenots from La Rochelle in France, hence the name. It was rebuilt in 1994 by the new owners. A traditional style African lodge with thatched roof, animal skins and gardens. Close your eyes and picture grassland, makalani palm trees and acacia thickets.

It's all about gifts in this corner of northern Namibia. First the biggest meteorite in the world lands 80,000 years ago: 60 tonnes of nickel iron named Hoba which means... ‘gift’. Thanks very much. Then this lodge. A 10, 000-hectare haven originally given as a present. Wow. Thanks very much indeed. The lucky recipients? The French du Preez family. Who gave them that? The South African government. When? 1945. Why? For outstanding merit during the war. Woah.

A variety of accommodation options - chalets, family units, a private luxury villa and a guest house - all with air conditioning, WiFi and DSTV and your own terrace with a view of the waterhole or swimming pool.

The Private Villa is 500m from the main lodge. It can accommodate up to ten people in comfort and you have the option to have your own private chef. Private swimming pool.

The high-vaulted Guest House, with its private swimming pool, can accommodate a family or group of 8 to 10 people. There is also a separate extra room for your guide/driver.

Facilities

Swimming pool; garden; free WiFi; restaurant; bush dinners; 2 patios; built in braai/ BBQ; fire pit; lounges with private areas; inside and outside bar; waterhole; lapa with view of waterhole

Activities

The swimming pool is right there and you can watch animals and birds at the waterhole.

The lodge can help you arrange to go horse riding, mountain biking, clay-pigeon shooting and archery. They can even sort out plane tours. And there’s access to a flood lit tennis court as well as table tennis.

Join a guided game drive and look out for kudu, oryx, ostrich, eland and zebra. You may get lucky and come across leopard and cheetah. More than 20 different game species live on the farm. You can go on game drives to other waterholes too and there’s a nearby natural fountain which attracts game and birds.

Or head to Etosha National Park. The eastern gate is a 1 hour 30 minutes drive.

The famous sink hole lakes aren’t far either - Guinas and Otjikoto. A pioneering scuba diving film was made here in the 1970s and of course don’t miss the Hoba meteorite which lies between Tsumeb and Grootfontein.
