An eco tourism site off the beaten track, Safarihoek is a modern lodge close to the south western border of Etosha. Set amongst the Mopane trees in a private game reserve there’s 65,000 hectares of vast, flat savannah in front of you.
When we say close to Etosha, it is in fact 120 km drive from the southern entrance gate into the park, far enough at least ,that we would rather sell this as a destination on its own and rightly so, since wildlife is numerous and in abundance. All that's missing is the pan.
It's worth noting that the drive to get there takes you through some cattle farms and farm gates. Look out for signboards saying Etosha Heights to find the lodge as per it's previous name.
Spacious thatched chalets with a modern interior - you’ll find eleven here, each named after a local tree. Presumably as in species rather than moniker. One family chalet, 8 luxury and 2 classic (wheelchair friendly). Private balcony, ensuite bathroom with indoor shower - you’ll find the ever popular outdoor shower in the luxury chalets. There’s also a small work desk area.
They say there’s no better place to photograph than Iceland but the vantages you get from Safarihoek might nudge the mighty Viking off your screensaver. This photographic hide takes the biscuit. It’s built on 2 levels giving you different views of a large, natural waterhole. Lower ground offers an eye level view of the animals, wander upstairs and you’ll have daybeds, a fridge and a designated photographer’s ledge. Designed by a Namibian wildlife photographer there are charging stations with international adapters, areas to store your camera gear and camera supports. Enough said.
Swimming pool; WiFi in main areas; laundry service; battery charging facilities; air conditioning; mosquito nets; hairdryers; minibar and coffee making facilities; wine cellar; curio shop.
Morning and afternoon game drives; night game drives; private game drives (bookable in advance); bush walks; bush meals and picnics can be arranged; sundowner view point; star gazing; and of course, that all important photography hide with staff who really know their stuff. They're also flexible on all activities to make sure you have the best experience.
In the area you can also visit the Omapaha Himba Village (on your own as this is not activity offered by the lodge).
