Okutala Etosha Lodge
This is what you’d call a lodge with a view - bang in front of a waterhole. Granted, not the biggest pond, but perfect if you want to get intimate, share a bottle of wine and watch rhinos and giraffes slurping away as you do. They look after orphaned giraffes here too so be prepared for long necked visitors to wander over. Heaven for the kids.
Okutala Lodge is on a 24,000 hectare farm. It’s huge. Expect a long drive from gate to lodge - but trundle in around dusk and you’ll see wildlife everywhere. And you haven’t even arrived yet.
Far enough away from Etosha to feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere but still close enough to visit - we’re talking about 25 miles or give or take a 40 minute drive.
21 air conditioned rooms, each with a private shaded patio watching the waterhole. Seriously, these animals will be 40 yards away.
There are family rooms if you need one with a shared bathroom and a separate adjacent room. You have your own door between the two so you can check on the kids without leaving your apartment. Stumble in, resettle and get back to the wine and wildlife. Quick.
The other thing the kids will love - those giraffes roaming around whilst you’re eating breakfast or in the pool. There are resident chipmunks, mongoose and peacocks too.
You’ll see the ubiquitous thatched roofs but the beds are comfortable with lots of pillows and a little gift which is rather solicitous of them.
Rooms have: Private shaded patio with a view; Air conditioning; Fitted mosquito nets; Hair dryers; Coffee making facilities
Main area: Swimming pool - floodlit at night; Outdoor oven by the pool; Restaurant with a view of the waterhole - floodlit at night; Photographic hide at waterhole; WiFi; Shaded private parking; Curio shop; Wheelchair friendly; Laundry service; 18 seater Mercedes sprinter bus shuttle; Fenced in runway/fly-in safaris
Albert’s the man to know if you want to take a safari. He pretty much knows it all when it comes to wildlife.
You can feed hyena, giraffe, elephant, leopard and cheetah - they hand raise and rehabilitate animals with the aim to re release them.
They also offer guided hikes, cycling safaris, an endangered species tour and bush buffets and picnics.
