Khulu Ivory Lodge
Khulu Ivory is the luxurious and exclusive sister camp to the (slightly) bigger Ivory Lodge in a private concession on the edge of Hwange National Park.
Just off the main road between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, the Ivory concession is ridiculously accessible. No hour-long bumpy ride into the park for you, your palatial suite is a 2.5km drive off the tar and yet, on arrival, you will feel many worlds away from civilisation. Here is Africa as it has been for donkeys' years.
Khulu Ivory has just three suites. Built on teak decks, the sides are stretched canvas, the front opens onto a shaded game-viewing balcony and the whole lot is cooled by a deep thatched roof and ancient hardwood trees. In winter, when the game viewing is best, the nights can get cold especially in such an open construction. Electric blankets - admittedly, some concessions to modernity are made - and hot water bottles turn your room into a cosy enclave surrounded by the rich noises of the African bush at night.
The main living area is an expansive open-fronted thatched hall with a swimming pool on the deck from where you can watch elephants and all the wildlife of Hwange at the waterhole below. A raised firepit is the scene of your evening's entertainment - especially if old Khulu himself is on hand to spin a yarn or two.
