Khulu Ivory Lodge
Khulu Ivory is the luxurious and exclusive sister camp to the (slightly) bigger Ivory Lodge in a private concession on the edge of Hwange National Park.
Just off the main road between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, the Ivory concession is ridiculously accessible. No hour-long bumpy ride into the park for you, your palatial suite is a 2.5km drive off the tar and yet, on arrival, you will feel many worlds away from civilisation. Here is Africa as it has been for donkeys' years.
Khulu Ivory has just three suites. Built on teak decks, the sides are stretched canvas, the front opens onto a shaded game-viewing balcony and the whole lot is cooled by a deep thatched roof and ancient hardwood trees. In winter, when the game viewing is best, the nights can get cold especially in such an open construction. Electric blankets - admittedly, some concessions to modernity are made - and hot water bottles turn your room into a cosy enclave surrounded by the rich noises of the African bush at night.
The main living area is an expansive open-fronted thatched hall with a swimming pool on the deck from where you can watch elephants and all the wildlife of Hwange at the waterhole below. A raised firepit is the scene of your evening's entertainment - especially if old Khulu himself is on hand to spin a yarn or two.
Ivory Lodge, Khulu Ivory and Camp Amalinda in Matopos are part of the family-owned and run Amalinda Collection. Service standards at all three lodges are exceptionally high without losing that vital personal touch. Matopos, Hwange and Victoria Falls is a combination that offers dramatic and unique scenery, an unparalleled safari experience and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. So what are you waiting for?
Full board accommodation in three large thatch-roofed tented suites; en suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers; private game viewing deck facing the waterhole; living area with lounge, bar and dining area; plunge and game viewing deck; elevated fire pit; waterhole hide; transfers; laundry; campsite
Activities at Khulu include night and day game drives into Hwange National Park in open safari vehicles with exceptionally knowledgeable guides; walking safaris in the private concession; birding; a hide at the waterhole for some macro shots of elephants' toenails
