Itinerary Details

Arriving by air, you get an idea of the size of the Zambezi River, Victoria Falls and the swathe of natural wilderness beyond.

When you're there: After a quick transfer from Livingstone Airport to your hotel, you'll be on the Zambezi river and 5 minutes walk from the Victoria Falls – one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Spend most of the day exploring Victoria Falls from its many vantage points: opposite, above, below and from the air. The sight and sound of a million tonnes of water falling in a single curtain is exhilarating.

Around Victoria Falls there are many activities ranging from a serene sunset river cruise, to lunch on Livingstone Island, just above the falls. Game viewing is never far from the agenda with game reserves all around Victoria Falls and some exciting close encounters with elepants and lions. Craft markets provide plenty of local colour and the throng of adventure activities provide an energetic atmosphere charged with the power of the Zambezi River.

Today you will meet your private guide and be transferred by road to your lodge - Nanzhila Plains Safari Camp. The transfer is roughly 3 hours from Livingstone to the Dundumwezi Gate. From here you will continue to enjoy an approximate 2 hours game drive into the camp.

When you're there: Situated in the southern section of Kafue National Park, the habitats include riverine forests, floodplains, dense wooded plains and open grasslands that turn to swamps in the rainy season.

Wildlife in the Kafue includes animals not seen anywhere else in Zambia, and rarely seen in the whole of southern Africa. The Kafue is your best chance of seeing cheetah in Zambia and the large herds of puku, impala, hartebeest, roan and sable attract the attention of lion and leopard. Birdlife, like everywhere in Zambia, is prolific with water and woodland types in abundance.

Activities include guided walking nature trails, river safaris, game drives and night drives, which often follow the active lions as they search for prey, visits to Lake Itezhi-Tezi and village tours.

From Nanzhila Camp it's a game drive through the park north to Fig Tree Bush Camp named after the giant fig tree overlooking a sandy lagoon which attracts an astounding variety of wildlife.

On the way: The drive is slow and enjoyable as you meander to your safari lodge stopping for lunch en-route.

When you're there: You'll fall into the routine easily. Morning game drives, followed by a lunch and a siesta topped off with more excellent game viewing in the afternoon/evening. More camp activities include fishing, boat cruises and a tour of the Mukambi Community School.

The park is packed with animals including elephant, lion, plains game and endemic sub-species of giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. The birdlife is astounding with over 400 species recorded and walking safaris are wonderful opportunities to see and hear many of them.

From Lusaka you will head off to the Lower Zambezi National Park for an altogether different experience.

On the way: Your transfer to Lower Zambezi National Park will take about 2 and a half hours and you'll soon be on the Zambezi enjoying a scenic safari.

When you're there: Activities focus on the river in the Lower Zambezi Park with motor boat safaris, scenic cruises, canoeing safaris, sport fishing and birding. You can also go on game drives and walking safaris into the plains and towards the scenic Zambezi escarpment.

Wildlife is prolific and large in the Lower Zam. Large herds of elephant and buffalo are common and the river attracts a great variety of plains game as well as Africa's predators: lion, leopard, hyena and you might some smaller fascinating nocturnal carnivores on your night drives.

Your final day offers one last game viewing activity before the transfer to Lusaka International Airport to mark the end of an amazing Zambian safari.
