Kalahari

Pension Gessert

Pension Gessert is a neat, well-run B&B in Keetmanshoop - a crossroads town linking South Africa with southern Namibia in a vast and empty realm that marks the transition from Kalahari grassland to the rocky succulence of the Nama-Karoo.

At the end of a long, tiring drive all you need is a comfy bed, a hot shower and good meal. You're not too fussy. But get it wrong and it feels like your world is collapsing. Luckily Pension Gessert is a reliable runner in the competition for best stopover spot in Keetmanshoop, a town in south-central Namibia that owes its very existence to the stopover trade.

Accommodation is in just seven en suite bedrooms - so it's an intimate and warm ambience you can expect - all with air conditioning and simply decorated with peachy-coloured tiled floors and walls to match.

A bright and airy breakfast room opens out onto the mature garden with a large and inviting swimming pool (now we're talking bonus material).

While the breakfasts are a signature, Pension Gessert does not do dinners pointing you instead in the direction of a few hearty eateries in the town an easy walk from your guesthouse.

Day trips to the Quiver Tree Forest, Giants' Playground and the Mesosaurus Fossil are well worth including in your itinerary rather than whizzing through this wonderfully unpopulated region that is bigger than a lot of countries.

Facilities

Bed and breakfast accommodation in 7 rooms ranging from single to family units; en suite bathrooms with shower; ceiling fan; air conditioning; swimming pools; lounge; secure parking

Activities

Day trips to nearby attractions including the Quivertree Forest, Giants' Playground, Fossil and, if you've got the whole day, Fish River Canyon viewpoint.

Brukkaros Crater Campsite

Brukkaros Crater is a place so lonely and desolate, even the campsite is extinct. But then again, this is Namibia. Who needs a campsite?
