Melissa's Guesthouse

Melissa's Guesthouse is a convenient - and quintessentially Namibian - stopover en route to the rugged and desolate Kaokoland region via Etosha from both Swakopmund and Windhoek.

And of a stopover what more do we want other than a dip in the pool, a cold drink, a hearty meal and a hot shower? A comfortable bed? Check. Friendly hosts and authentic Namibian hospitality? Double check.

Melissa's Guesthouse, in the tiny town of Kamanjab near the western entrance to Etosha, is cut from a mould unique to Namibia: rough face brick, tin roof, tiled floors, gaudy animal prints, chunky homemade furniture and an open embrace of welcome.

Rooms are all en suite with a hot shower and come in twin, double or family forms. The restaurant features venison of the day in dishes like schnitzels and African curries and a suitably robust South African red or fine Namibian lager are always on hand to wash it all down.

While Melissa's is never going to be much more than a welcome budget-friendly overnight stop, there are some fascinating activities if your itinerary allows. A walk around a San and Khoi rock art site, now a national monument, is not only a fascinating window into an aeons-old culture but it's also rather scenic, especially from the uppermost vantage point. And the Himba village, located inside the guest farm, offers an excellent insight into the ways of this incredible people - and the visit is a little less of an objectifying tourist trap than some you'll find further north because the owners, Eben and Marianne are deeply connected with the Himba in this area.

And if all that activity is too much for you, Melissa's Guesthouse has a full-featured salon and spa with sauna to help you unwind completely.
