Kruger National Park

Hippo Hollow Country Estate

Hippopotamus. The river horse. To be honest, it’s closer to a pig than a horse. But river pig doesn’t sound so grand, so graceful. It sounds like an insult. And who doesn’t want some grace, some grandeur? There were loads of them once, in rivers throughout Africa. Now they’re extinct north of Khartoum and south of the Zambezi river, except in a few protected areas such as the Kruger National Park. And that’s 10 minutes away. They say you can watch hippo graze while sipping cocktails on the lawn. Who knew they were so civilised?

Situated just outside of Hazyview, between the Drakensberg Mountains to the west and the low-lying bushveld of the Greater Kruger Area to the east. Hippo Hollow began life as a local farmers pub on a family pecan farm, now it's a 91-bedroomed country hotel on the banks of the Sabie River. A good base to explore the Mpumalanga Province.

There’s a range to choose from.

18 thatched River Chalets overlook the Sabie River and are good for small families. The one bedroomed Garden Chalets are for couples and the Courtyard Rooms are best for business travellers. All rooms and chalets have ensuite bathrooms and tea/coffee facilities.

River Chalets:
They are all close together and have steps inside to a loft area, so better for children who are past toddler age. Air conditioned with a main bedroom and 2 single beds or a sleeper couch in the loft. Private deck with river views, double showers and ceiling fans.

Garden Chalets:
19 air conditioned chalets in the gardens. They sleep 2 and have ceiling fans, double showers, satellite television, tea & coffee facilities and verandahs overlooking the garden or pool.

Courtyard Rooms:
54 air conditioned rooms with television and Wi-Fi. These rooms have balconies or verandahs overlooking the gardens. For younger children, cots are available on request. For older children, a number of interleading rooms are available.

Garden; Two swimming pools; 2 restaurants - Hippo Hollow Restaurant and Shangaan River Club ; Lounge & Bar Area; Free Wi-Fi; Curio Shop; Laundry Service; 24-Hour Security; 24-Hour Paramedic on Call; Baby Sitting Service & Cots Available; Free Secure Parking; Mpumalanga Helicopters on-site; Picnic lunches available on request; Perry’s Bridge Trading Post Lifestyle Centre 1km up the road

“The hippopotamus’s day is passed in sleep; at night he hunts”. Too true. Too true. So, keep your eye out for elephants by day, hippos by night.

If you stay at base, the Shangaan River Club does an evening of traditional song and dance, led by local peformers. They also host “Bridge Dinners” – so you can experience the Sabie River at night. Or, forget all that and just hide in a hammock by the pool.

If you want to venture out there’s masses to do in the Lowveld and Kruger National Park. Hippo Hollow can help to book excursions and if flying high’s your thing, Mpumalanga Helicopter Company is on the Hippo Hollow Estate.

There’s the whole Panorama Route to explore or you could head to Blyde River Canyon.

Elephant Whispers is a place to see elephants- they have six tamed and trained elephants who have been rescued from planned game reserve culling operations.

Perry’s Bridge Reptile Park is popular as is the Cheetah Project Tour.

The Lowveld is also a haven for adrenalin junkies - activities include microlighting, rafting, wall climbing and an aerial cable trail.

For kids, there’s paint balling, inflatable kayaking and quad biking.

There are also full day, morning, afternoon and sunset game drives available at a range of prices.
