Kruger National Park

Garonga Safari Camp

Listen to the deafening silence. Lion, leopard, cheetah. Stalking. Zebra, giraffe, buck. Grazing. They go in for the kill. Crocodiles watching, hippos wallowing, hyenas waiting. Rhinos and elephants pretty much minding their own business. And there, in the trees, is you. Enjoying camp life. Set in 22,000 hectares in the Lowveld region of Limpopo. A 90 minute drive from the Kruger National Park. It’s a rough road in, so you’ll be best off with a SUV.

6 luxury tents with private decks and views overlooking a dry riverbed.

The tents have rough plastered walls and overarching canvas tents.

They sleep two and have large, draped beds. They like their draping here. And why not. It looks splendid. And rather romantic.

Indoor and outdoor showers and a hammock on the wooden deck.

And, and. There is this. A ‘sleep out’ tree house... not for the faint hearted as your world is high, high in a tree but it’s pretty excellent. A big four poster bed, lots of draping (of course), a viewing deck and a place to sit and enjoy dinner. This is camping Garonga style. You’ll be alone, under the stars, all night in the bush. It’s so popular you must pre-book it.

If you love it, book the outdoor bath too - atmospheric, memorable. And totally incongruous to be lathering up as you watch the wild world.

This camp is a proper ‘close to nature’ place. You might see a lion from your tent, monkeys often try to have a look around but sleep deeply as there is 24 hour security.

Fresh food prepared by a chef; Boma with bar and fireplace; Bush bath; Massage overlooking river bed; Swimming pool; Yoga room at Little Garonga; Curio shop

Game drives for the Big 5, with tea, coffee and snacks in the bush - or cocktails and wine in the evening. You can go pre dawn, in the morning or late afternoon. In an open air Land Rover. They have expert guides and trackers who help you see the animals on your wish list.

You can also go on safari walks with a game ranger.

AfriCamps at Mackers

Crazy name this one. Meet the Mackers. Ryan and Michelle opened this place in July 2018. Their dream? To have a farm. E-I-E-I-O.

H12 Leshiba

No marble lobby, no crystal chandelier, this place is remote, spectacular and rocks a lot of clay. Admittedly H12 is an odd name. It’s H for the heart of your host and 12 for the number of hours on a clock, months in a year etc. Interpret however you like. It’s art, darling. And H12 Leshiba is about a bed in an art gallery in the mountains in the sky.

Savanna is a small, intimate and luxurious safari lodge in a private concession inside a private game reserve adjacent to the Kruger National Park. It is the epitome of an exclusive luxury African safari.
