Between the Limpopo and Luvuvhu River deep in the Makuleke Contractual Park lies Pafuri Camp. This is the northern section of Kruger National Park, the meeting point of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. It's also the ancestral home of the Makuleke people and tales of early explorers and ancient civilisations abound.
Seriously. It's remote. It will to take you 45 minutes to get to camp from Pafuri Gate or 90 minutes from Punda Maria Gate. And hurry because you have to be in camp by Kruger gate closing times.
Phew! You made it. Bags down. Relax. Wildlife, birdlife, good life. This place is unfenced. Watch the wildlife flow.
Hearsay has it that this is the best birding bit of Kruger Park. But then. Hearsay evidence is not admissible in a court of law. Fair enough. Although we're fairly sure it's a fair assessment and besides we're not in a court of law. Anyway. What we know for sure is you will see birds. Lots of them. And this is the largest private concession in the Kruger Park. Indeed. And Pafuri Camp sure has fine looking tents. Fact.
Pafuri has luxury safari tents enough for 52 people. All with en-suite bathrooms and views of the Luvuvhu River. The tents have fans, outdoor showers and extra length king size beds?? In a tent? Yup. Luxury luxury here we come.
Seven are Family Tents which sleep up to four. You can walk through to a separate children's bedroom with twin beds and mosquito nets.
Swimming pool; various in and outdoor dining venues; bar; lounge area; viewing deck; sundeck with lounge chairs; boma
This is the land of game drives and this place is no exception. You’ll be driven day and night in open 4x4 vehicles. The Makuleke concession set is one of the few true wilderness areas left in South Africa. Large herds of elephant and buffalo wander most of the year round.
You could see hippo, crocodile, eland, grysbok, lion, elephant, etc etc etc.
At night you could see lesser bush babies, genet and civet. Or lion. Feasting. On that lesser bush baby. Oh.
Children under 6 are not allowed on game activities, and children under 12 can't join walking safaris.
For the walking safaris you travel with an armed game ranger. For peace of mind.
Birdwatching is popular here too. Not surprising considering there are over 350 species. You may see Pel's fishing owl, wattle eyed flycatcher, African crowned eagle and racket-tailed roller.
Birding game drives and bush walks with a knowledgeable guide can be easily arranged.
If you're into history and culture this area rocks. Literally. Rock art, hand tools, relics of life of Stone Age man.
Or visit a Makuleke village and experience local culture through a traditional meal, dancing and Sangoma (healer) visit.
