Rhino Post Safari Lodge
The lodge is deep in the southern Kruger, approximately 10km north-east of Skukuza and 40 minutes from the main Kruger Gate. On a private concession, it also shares a boundary with Mala Mala in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. Animals roam freely here. There are 12,000 glorious hectares to explore. And that's 12,000 hectares of prime game viewing.
So, what of the lodge? Well, it's a romantic place. There's a big wine cellar, fireplace and bar which overlooks the waterhole in the dry river bed. You, my friend, are in the middle of the African wilderness.
You'll sleep in safari tents raised on wooden platforms. Everything has been built using natural materials to blend in and the whole establishment has an eco-friendly vibe. You'll be housed under huge jackalberry and tamboti trees, overlooking the river bed, which can be dry, depending on the season. Jackalberry trees were named after their seeds were found in the dung of jackals. Who on earth was looking? Anyway, they're pretty stunning with leaves loved by elephant, rhino, giraffe, buffalo, and kudu. Antelope, monkey and porcupine prefer the tamboti.
This is a small safari camp with only 8 tented suites. It's a luxurious place, and because it's small you get great service and attention. There are wooden floors, thatched roofs, canvas walls, a ceiling fan and views of the adjacent riverbed.
You'll also have an outdoor shower, overhead fan, mini bar, mosquito nets, a safe and tea & coffee making facilities. The fact that they also give you bathrobes and electric blankets, tells you all you need to know about your stay. It will be delightful.
Swimming pool; spa; waterhole ; extensive wine cellar; child minder service and laundry service
Rhino Post Safari Lodge focuses solely on game drives. And you should see a lot, including the Big Five.
Game drives are on offer in the early morning and in the late afternoon-evening. They last about 3-4 hours. The guides are extremely knowledgeable with years of experience living and working here. Please note, no children under the age of 6 are allowed on game drives.
In-between drives, hang out by the swimming pool. There's also a spa. Or you can have a massage in your safari suite. Spa treatments are conducted by professional therapists.
Hungry? Head to the deck. Meals are usually served in the open air boma, on the wooden deck at the main lodge. You can even organise a private and romantic candlelit affair in the dry riverbed. Which is pretty special.
And if that's got you in the mood, go for the ultimate bush experience and sleep outside at Plains Camp. This is organised for you on elevated wooden platforms. You'll be under a canopy of stars with just the sounds of the bush. Owls, bush babies, nightjars and even the far-off roar of lions. It's oft described as the ultimate safari experience - and, it really is. A healthy experience too. So say the experts. Apparently, spending just two days entirely outdoors can move a person's internal clock. And not just a little bit but 2.5 hours closer to being in sync with our natural sleep-wake cycle, and that is an excellent thing.
