Maun Lodge

It has no beginning, no end. Like infinity, or a circle, perhaps a doughnut? Ooh, yes please. Warm. With extra sugar. Thanks. That's what people say about the Thamalakane River.

Not that the river is an actual doughnut, mind, but that it has no real beginning, no real end. It was created by the effects of the Thamalakane Fault which has been dancing a merry tune for about 2 million years now. It's the fault's fault that the delta’s there too. It forced the water to fan out into all those water channels - and hey presto - Okavango Delta. Nice to meet you. Muse on, muse on from the comfort of your lodge. Maun Lodge. You're right beside the river. Looking over it in fact.

Botswana's tourism capital lies on the southern fringes of the Okavango Delta, and it still has a dusty, frontier town vibe. For many tourists, Maun is the point of entry into the Delta. At the lodge you're also only 2.5km from the town centre.

Maun Lodge was opened in 1999 by a president no less. President Mogae. It's still used a lot by government officials, people on business trips and, of course, international tourists. The airport is only about 10 minutes away so it's very convenient. And you can eat under a thatched roof and groove along to the regular live music on offer.

Maun Lodge has a variety of room options. Each with air conditioning, a TV with satellite channels, tea and coffee facilities, WiFi and en-suite bathrooms. Some rooms also have a balcony and river views.

And yes, the Riverfront Rooms have river front views. Ten luxury doubles each with a private veranda. There are two similar Presidential Suites and these have king size beds. Full room and laundry service available for all luxury rooms.

Two executive suites are available, with king size beds, private lounge and bar area.

There are 88 standard rooms. They have a TV and room and laundry service too.

Finally there are the budget-friendly thatch chalets. 12 of these including family ones with 2 three-quarter beds and a sleeper couch, and twin chalets with 2 three-quarter beds. All chalets are air conditioned, have en-suite bathrooms and tea & coffee facilities.

En suite rooms with air conditioning, satellite TV, tea/coffee and wi-fi; a la carte restaurant; riverside bar; swimming pool with children's pool; gym; airport shuttle; laundry

Maun’s local sports centre is close by so you can head there to play both tennis and squash.

If you want to hit the shops before going into the bush, Maun Mall is 3km down the road.

And you have the Okavango Delta right there. You can see it from above by taking a tour by helicopter. The hotel can also organise cultural tours of a nearby village, and day trips to the delta.
