Hauchabfontein Campsite

Hauchabfontein Camping is between Sossusvlei and the Naukluft. It makes a good base camp. Sossusvlei is 55 km away Naukluft 44 km. Basically in 45 minutes you can be at the Sesriem Canyon.

There's desert all around but you're in a lush little corner here. A short walk from the camp and you'll arrive at the rock pools which stretch for six kilometres. Beautiful views of the Tsaris and Naukluft mountains.

The camp also has its own private quiver tree forest with more than 2,000 trees. It's one of the biggest quiver tree forests in the country. And there's a nearby valley of old, wild giant fig trees too.

There, beside the river, in the shadow of the mountains. Tent up. Breathe. Sit. Stare. Every minute of the day those mountains look different. Know what the trees above you are? Ebony. Strong, exotic, hard. It used to be used to ward off evil spirits. Cups made from the stuff were seen as anti-poison protection. Not sure how reliable they were.

There are six camp sites - all shaded by ebony and acacia trees. Lots of space between them so you won't feel like you're crammed in music festival style. Electrical power is available up at the the farmhouse.

All the sites lie along the Tsauchab River. Each has a drinking water tap, a washing up area and a braai place. There are clean bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets.

Hot showers; toilet block, ice pack freezing; internet access; charging facilities; meat and wood can be bought on site

Swim in the rock pools, go hiking, go bird watching. You can also go on various farm drives and game watch. There are often free roaming baboons, antelope, zebra, giraffe. Paw prints of the elusive leopard have been spied.

The Secret Valley hiking trail is seven kilometres long and you can explore the quiver tree forest - although you have to go with a guide as it’s private.

The ubiquitous sundowner trip is on the menu too. Yay!

And there are opportunities nearby to go canoeing, kayaking, climbing, cycling, fishing and horse riding.

If you want to venture out, Namib-Naukluft National Park and the Sesriem Canyon is a 45 minute drive and it’s just over an hour from the dunes of Sossusvlei. There is also Neuras Wine farm which is 22 km away. And Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park is just over an hours drive as is the NamibRand Nature Reserve.
