BullsPort Guest Farm Campsite
Pitch tent. Pitch perfect. Mountain camping. Naukluft mountain camping to be precise. Feel wild and free, sense the wildlife, deep breath the weather. There's just no way of knowing what kind of unexpected life experiences can result from spending the night in the wilderness. Get ready for a personal epiphany. You're on a farm 250km southwest of Windhoek. Looks like it's going to be a luscious day.
According to geologists, the rock is more than 500 million years old. At least. Scorpions and snakes like it here too, so keep an eye on your feet. The campsite is in a grove of shady false-ebony and sweet-thorn trees at the foot of the Naukluft Mountains. And on the BüllsPort Farm. It's one of the oldest farms in Namibia and it's still a working one. 10,000 hectares and approximately 170 head of cattle. And there are horses too. Stunners bred for jumping and dressage.
There are two options: a site exclusively for one group or a shared camping site. They're both 3kms away from the guest farm and have two showers with water heated up by a donkey - that is, a boiler fired with Namibian hardwood, which you buy from the shop. They have two flush toilets, two sinks and a dining lapa with a roof. So you get some shade. But no electricity. Meals and tours are available by prior request. The private site is suitable for up to ten people.
Swimming pool; free wi-fi in public areas
Firstly, have a tour of the farm to experience how a working Namibian farm operates.
There's also a horse stud here. They breed Namibian Warmblood horses and you can have lessons or go on day treks. Sunrise and sunset ones too.
Now. To appreciate the Naukluft Mountains, you need to walk into them. Watch the land sink into mellow greenness. There are many trails to hike, some take three hours, some take eight days. Particularly if you get lost on the three hour one. The Köcherbaumschlucht (quiver-tree gorge) on the farm is one of the most impressive gorges in the mountain massif. You can also drive to the top of the plateau and walk down past the pools to a pick-up point. The Rock Arch is a good trail too. Or, from the camping site, you can head for the Waterkloof or Olive Trail, eight and five hours respectively. Or not. It does sound like hard work. So how about a slow wander along the Naukluft River?
You may find the kudu so tame you almost have to chase them off. There are loads of them. Hartmann’s mountain zebra and klipspringer too.
Look out for a wide variety of birds including the crimson breasted and white tailed shrike, waxbill and Monteiro's hornbill.
