Sossusvlei

Le Mirage Desert Lodge and Spa

You will indeed rub your eyes several times upon first site of Le Mirage Desert Lodge. It looks like an ancient stone palace from north Africa complete with turrets and archers' peep-holes.

Inside, however, is far less imposing and the courtyard has a soothing cover of grass and a large swimming pool. Not horses and sack-clad mercenaries arming themselves for battle as you might be expecting.

The Moorish theme continues into the 27 en suite rooms with earthy décor and bright fabrics framing the Gothic arched portrait windows. Modern amenities that no prince heir should be without include air conditioning, a safe, a mini bar, bath robes and a coffee and tea station.

Facilities

19 Oasis rooms with private balconies & 8 Camelthorn rooms; en suite bathrooms; air conditioning; fridge; restaurant; wellness spa; swimming pool; jacuzzi; small waterhole

For those looking to sleep out under the stars, book 1 of 2 additional sky rooms, open -air, under the stars. This is booked in addition to either an Oasis or Camelthorn room as this is weather dependent.

Activities

Sossusvlei excursions; quad bike tours; nature drives; scenic flights; hot air ballooning

The wellness spa is a feature of the Leading Lodges of Africa portfolio and the food, service, amenities and activities are excellent.

Daily excursions to Sossusvlei are the main activity of the day. Your start is early to catch the best light and the outing is followed up with a hearty and well-earned breakfast. There is also quad biking, nature drives, scenic flights and hot air ballooning.

The Elegant Desert Lodge

On approaching Elegant Desert Lodge, about 40km from Sesriem, the first thing you will notice is that it’s not exactly all that elegant. In fact it’s a fairly solid, stone-built, thatched-roofed monolith in the typical farmstead style of the early Dutch settler.
