Sossusvlei Desert Lodge

Sossusvlei Desert Lodge (formerly Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge) is an elegant and exciting lodge near Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert. With ten split-level stone and glass suites, the luxury is sublime.

Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is not your usual. The exterior is a squat jumble of stones that looks more like the rocky mountains that surround it than a luxury lodge. If it weren't for the walls of glass and sculpted curves that reveal themselves on closer inspection, you'd think the building uninhabitable.

There are ten suites, separated by plenty of desert. Inside is pure luxury. Done in ivory, ochre and rock, the split level lounge opens onto a shaded verandah. Added touches like a window above the bed, a fireplace, air conditioning, an outside shower and a music system make the sumptuous suites just a little more special.

The living area is staged on several levels, each with gentle curves and glass walls that peel away to bring the view closer. The dining room is almost outside, and again little touches that make Sossusvlei Lodge something out of the ordinary: an electron telescope to rival the country's biggest, a walk-in wine cellar, a spring-fed swimming pool, a library and CD collection, and an open fireplace in the lounge.

10 split-level suites; en suite bathrooms; additional outdoor shower; air conditioning; fireplace; spotting scope; CD player; spring-fed swimming pool; wine cellar; curio shop; firelit lounge; terrace; open-sided dining room

Sossusvlei and Sesriem excursions; hot air ballooning; interpretive walks; game drives; quad bike trails; guided star gazing with an electronic telescope

Activities - led by an experienced guide - include game drives, interpretive walks, excursions to Sossusvlei dunes and Sesriem Canyon, quad bike trails, hot air ballooning and stargazing. The private reserve has many species of desert-adapted flora, fauna and avifauna that garnish the experience of luxurious isolation in the world's oldest desert.
