Swakopmund Sands Hotel
Out with the old, in with the new. The only feature remaining of the old Hotel Adler Garni is its excellent location. And quite right, too, as the hotel was due a makeover some time last century and you'd struggle to find a better position in Swakopmund.
The sea is right across the road and you're a stone's throw from The Tug Restaurant and The Jetty. The former a Swakopmund institution, the latter fast becoming one. The Beach Bar - truth is, it's got so many nicknames we never know what to call it - is yet another Swakopmund institution although with an altogether different style from the Jetty: with beach-sand flooring, fishing-net roofing and palm-frond walls this place takes its rustique quite seriously.
As for the hotel itself, you wouldn't recognise it. The new owners have gone all boutique on us. Big time. With open-plan showers, vivid highlights, brushed metal appliances and chi-chi décor throughout there isn't a square inch that doesn't shout 'boutique' and that's not to mention the new room names: ruby, sapphire, emerald.. you get the picture.
But the makeover isn't only cosmetic we are happy to report. Early indicators point to a professional outfit and friendly staff pumped with a strong desire to do you good. The rooms are spacious - we'll make sure you get the best - and fitted with such essentials as underfloor heating against the perennial coolth of the Atlantic breeze, minibar, free wi-fi and his n' hers gowns.
The hotel does not serve dinner but with several excellent restaurants within walking distance, they'd be taking coals to Newcastle.
Bed and breakfast accommodation in 19 rooms and suites with varying configurations including single, twin, double and family units; en suite bathrooms; TV; minibar; underfloor heating; tea/coffee; safe; hairdryer and universal plug points; off-street parking; laundry service; breakfast room and lounge
Walking distance from the town centre with its shops, restaurants, galleries, museums and general services; aquarium and beach across the road; Gull's Cry beach bar; Jetty and Mole Beach. Aside from that Swakop is activity-central. You'd need to spend several weeks here to get everything done so we've compiled a handy shortlist of the main attractions.
