An independent (self-drive) tour is one of the best and most affordable ways to explore Southern Africa.
One of the most enjoyable and flexible ways to explore Namibia is to hire a car and drive yourself to the remote destinations. You can take your time, stop along the way and change your itinerary at short notice.
The road network is excellent, well sign-posted and traffic is very light. Most of your motoring is done on well-graded gravel roads. Careful driving is essential and you should allow for an average speed of 60-80km/hr when calculating your driving times.
Almost all of the lodges, game reserves and attractions in Namibia are accessible in a normal sedan vehicle.
Or you can combine your self-drive tour with a camping element to add an extra dimension of freedom to your holiday. A popular option is to combine a camping trip with some luxurious lodges and guided safaris to get the best of both worlds.
Talk to us about your self-drive camping tour of Namibia. We hire out 4WD vehicles complete with camping equipment and will make all the necessary bookings and ground arrangements for you. Plus our service comes with years of camping and touring experience and we can give you the best advice available.
Botswana, Zambia and Victoria Falls
Self-drive tours of Botswana and Zambia can be rewarding. They can also be quite tiresome. Vast distances between attractions are compounded by trecherous road conditions making for long, bumpy days behind the wheel.
In the rainy season, driving is near impossible as roads become impassable and, being so remote, help is not easily found.
Victoria Falls is a compact area, with a good road network but all the lodges offer transfer services to the Victoria Falls, the airports and the activity operators include transfer services in their packages.
We can certainly arrange car hire for an adventurous self-drive tour, Botswana, Zambia and Victoria Falls are best served as fly-in or guided safari destinations. However, sections of your safari may well include a self-drive option so talk to your Travel Expert about the best options for combining a self-drive tour with a fly-in or guided safari.

Look. There. Miles in the distance. What is that? It sure ain’t no fire burning. No smoke on the water. It’s mist. Deep, deep, misty mist. With the river running through it. But it’s no babbling brook. No siree. It’s so noisy the Kololo called it Mosi-oa-Tunya, ‘the smoke that thunders’. Sheesh, what a racket.
