Vic Falls is like a rock concert in Hyde Park. Either you pay through the nose for a golden circle VIP ticket or you hang back, enjoy the show on a big screen and soak up the atmosphere from the comfort of your picnic blanket. And you can get to the toilets easily.
Gorges Lodge, about 30 minutes' drive from Victoria Falls, is the laid-back, picnic blanket option perched on the edge of a gorge as its name implies. But that implication is lost in translation. The Zambezi, one of Africa's greatest rivers, sweeps past 200m below you - the yelping rafters look like ants - the gorge walls are dense with aeons-old forest and above ground the wild African bush stretches as far as your, oh look there's a G n' T.
Amazing view, tranquil setting, comfortable rooms, wonderful food- these are all bonuses compared to the excellent service you will get from owners Chris and Debbie. A true family business, Gorges Lodge offers a genuine welcome, warm hospitality and, from all the staff, you get the impression they have an overwhelming desire to make Vic Falls, and Gorges Lodge in particular, your most memorable experience in Africa.
Accommodation is in individual chalets, currently being refurbished to high standards and due for completion mid-2105. But whether you get an upgraded unit or not we are confident you will enjoy your stay here and congratulate yourself on a choice well made. Built of stone with thatch roofs, the chalets are either single or double storey with en suite bathrooms and all have private verandahs with that incredible view in full frame.
The main living area almost hovers above the gorge and a large deck is the life and soul of Gorges Lodge. The grounds are lush, shaded by indigenous trees and filled with birdsong.
Note: The road to Gorges Lodge includes a portion of unpaved road and the drive to Vic Falls takes about 30 mins. Included in your tariff is one free transfer per day. If you plan on doing lots of activities at Vic Falls that require frequent trips to and from your hotel then Gorges Lodge might be a bit far from the action; however, if you want a quiet retreat after the hustle and bustle of a day at Vic Falls and you plan to do only one or two additional activities, then Gorges Lodge is the perfect base for you.
BB, DBB or full board accommodation in 10 stone and thatch chalets; en suite bathroom; ceiling fan; mosquito nets; tea/coffee; private verandah; restaurant; lounge; bar and deck; laundry; transfers
With a free transfer to and from Vic Falls you are spoilt for choice. Visit Victoria Falls of course, from the Zimbabwean side, the Zambian side and from the air if you can, then the rest is up to you: game viewing day trips to Chobe, scenic river cruises, white-water rafting, the steam train, walk with lions and elephants- the list is long. At the lodge you can visit Chisuma Village and School, enjoy some traditional song and dance, watch eagles from the sundowner deck and take a guided walk and sundowners along the gorge path.
