Okonjima Lodge Plains Camp
Okonjima is a family-owned portfolio of lodges on a massive private reserve halfway between Windhoek and Etosha. The main lodge was the Hanssen's farmhouse before it was converted in 1992 and it offers comfort and seclusion in a dramatic African setting.
Okonjima Lodge Plains Camp has undergone a metamorphosis that began in 2008 and culminated with the addition of ten luxury suites in June 2014 and a name change from Okonjima Main Camp to Okonjima Plains Camp.
Retaining the personal charm of its family roots, Plains Camp now has three accommodation options to suit a greater range of budgets and of course the big draw, the AfriCat Foundation, continues to thrive.
Accommodation options now include six budget-friendly garden rooms, suited more to the wedding/function market who just need a bed for the night and aren't too fussed about the glorious view; 14 standard rooms which do have wonderful views of the waterhole and across the mountain-framed plains; and 10 luxury rooms, spaced further apart and furnished to a noticeably higher level, have the same plains views as the standard rooms. The accommodation is stone under thatch with screed or tile floors and oozing style out of every nook and cranny.
The main living area, or 'The Barn' as they call it, is a large and equally stylish space under a thatch roof looking out over the plains. The barn houses the dining area, lounge, bar, curio shop, swimming pool and viewing deck.
Plains Camp is the home-from-home lodge; Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp does what it says on the label; the Okonjima's Villa and Bush Suite both offer complete luxury and total seclusion fit for folks like Brangelina et al. The Omboroko campsite is wonderful with private ablutions, a swimming pool and electricity points (note: Okonjima Lodge facilities are not available to campers and activities are optional extras depending on availability).
Full board or half board accommodation in 6 budget-friendly garden rooms, 14 standard rooms with waterhole views and 10 luxury rooms with waterhole views; en suite bathrooms; tea/coffee; minibar; day bed; safe; ceiling fans; WiFi; shaded parking; main living area with lounge, dining area, curio shop, swimming pool and waterhole views; open-air campfire
AfriCat Foundation; leopard viewing; AfriCat Carnivore Care Centre; Bushman trail; self-guided nature trails up to 8km; bird watching
The AfriCat Foundation is world-renowned for its conservation work with all predators, with the emphasis on cheetahs and leopards, and is the main attraction at Okonjima. Track leopards, hyaena and rhino, follow the Bushman trail, and game viewing and birdwatching on the 220 sq km reserve.
